How United Kingdom VAT is calculated
Adding VAT: multiply the net price by 1.2. A GBP 100 item becomes GBP 120.00 once 20% VAT is added.
Removing VAT: divide the VAT-inclusive total by 1.2. From GBP 120.00 inclusive, the net is GBP 100 and the VAT portion is GBP 20.00.
The standard rate is 20%, but reduced or zero rates can apply to particular goods and services. For anything you file or charge, confirm the current rate and rules with the relevant United Kingdom tax authority.
